Taste of Toronto

Story

Taste is considered to be the world’s greatest restaurant festival, with events in 20 cities around the world. Taste of Toronto, the four-day food and drink extravaganza, attracts over 20,000 foodies and featured the most acclaimed chefs and gourmet tasting dishes from the city’s best restaurants. Partnering with Intellitix for the third consecutive year, Taste of Toronto offers guests fast, secure and convenient digital purchases with the use of a contactless payment system.

Their Challenge

1. To create a premium culinary event experience, whereby guests spend more time enjoying gourmet dishes

2. To simplify event operations, including fast vendor reconciliation and minimizing cash handling on-site

Our Intellitix Approach

Taste of Toronto went fully cashless with Intellitix’s advanced Cashless Payment system and equipped patrons with RFID-enabled ‘Taste Cards’ to use for all dishes and drinks sampled at the food festival. Guests could conveniently load digital event currency called ‘Crowns’ onto their RFID cards prior to the event online or throughout the event itself at ‘Crown Bank’ top-up stations located across the historic Fort York site.

With Intellitix’s cashless POS terminals at each vendor station, patrons were able to simply, securely, and quickly transact and taste the city’s food scene with a double-tap of their RFID cards. Intellitix’s closed-loop cashless system dramatically reduced queuing times and created an efficient and superior cashless event experience, free of payment interruptions throughout the four-day event.

Increasing the efficiency of making purchases at the event also allowed vendors to better connect with their audiences. Ian Hill, Front of House Captain at Splendido Restaurant alluded to this point, stating that, “For us, it takes cash out of the equation and it creates an opportunity to have a relationship with our guests, which is ideal.” The speed of transactions using a Cashless Payment system also resulted in vendors reaching higher levels of sales.

With every transaction digitally captured, registered patrons could view their spending history online with a record of the fine Toronto restaurants they sampled from. Customer sales data was also accessible to event organizers and vendors in real-time, allowing for fast and simple vendor reconciliation post-event without the arduous hassle of counting cash tills or weighing paper vouchers or tokens. Taste of Toronto’s event organizers had full transparency and control of their event revenue and gained actionable audience insight to improve the next editions of the food festival.
